Google launches new marketplace
Today at CES Google launched a new marketplace. Ok the fee is a little high at 30%, but come on - it's google.
Ok now that I have your attention, it's an online video marketplace, BUT read on true believers.
First check this snippet from the AP article:
With Google's marketplace, content suppliers can name their own price, from zero on up. The content owners who charge for video downloads must share 30 percent of the revenue with Google.
What do you need for a video marketplace?
1. search metaphor, data, content, etc. (easy for google)
2. Digital delivery (easy for google)
3. A payment system (the much rumored google wallet?)
4. A way to collect the % you keep from the seller or as part of the transaction (also would be part of a wallet)
5. nice-to-haves would be feedback, some community/comment/rating kinds of things, etc. oh and RSS subscriptions
Ok, now here's the leap of logic. What do you need for a PRODUCT marketplace?
1. search metaphor, content (google base anyone?), etc.
2. a checkout system/shopping cart
3. a payment system
4. A way to collect the % you keep from teh seller or as part of the transaction
5. nice-to-haves would be feedback, some community/rating kinds of things and of course RSS subscriptions.
This wouldn't be the first time that google started out with something that had narrow focus (froogle) and then kind of said "ah-ha" the stuff we built for that narrow focus can be broaded and solve a multitude of problems (Google Base).
What do you think readers? Am I on the right track or out in the weeds?
boy that's a nice leap. it's certainly a great point of entry to draw in attention given all the buzz around video and interactivity. thanks for framing it that way.
had a couple of Qs for you. first is related; second is a less so
1 why do you think they are waiting so long to put wallet out?
2 what do you think about the high-end content possibilities of the GOOG-AOL(TW) deal?
Haven't had a chance to study the video offering in depth yet but all this focus on video marketplace would make a great seque for more formal high-end content offerings (a la the comcast fan and ipod/itunes as a new video platform). If the google-aol deal turns out to be more about access to high end content than it may seem on first blush this makes this something else... they are putting video foot forward first to create a place for them to charge for content that people download right?...
