Google Video Store - A peak at future Google payment/marketplace products?

As you may have heard the Google Video Store is now open for business.

What's interesting is the way the purchasing system works. My thesis in this post is if you really examine the way the purchasins sytem of Google Video works you will see that it is designed to be components of a GENERIC ONLINE PURCHASING SYSTEM.

Let me walk you through it.  Chronologically, at this part of the flow I have previously purchased a video from Google Video which is an episode of the twilight zone.  I used my AMEX and paid $1.99.

Note: In the following screen shots I have blacked out any private information, you can assume there's real data there.  I also have added some arrows to call out a couple of things in the accompanying narrative.

First if you log into your google accounts, a new option under "Edit Services Info" called "Purchases" is shown.

Second if you click into this you will see a "Purchase History" view

Notes on this page:

1. Notice that the URL prefix has changed to "purchases."  It is NOT "video." as is everything else in the video store.

2. The user has a "Payment Methods" option and

3. a "Shipping Addresses" option.

4. Here you see my video, but notice it formatting and orientation of this view is very general.  The Seller is "Google Video"

Third, clicking into the "Payment Methods" takes you to the "Payment Methods" view:

1. Notice the URL has now changed to: "purchases.google.com/viewWallet"

2. You can add as many credit cards to your "wallet" and also select which one you want to be the default for future purchases.

Now if you click on an item you see the "Order Details" view:

This is very much like an "online receipt" that you would see if you were using something like PayPal where there can be time between the purchase, the clearing, shipping and receipt.  The page is used to give visibility to the buyer on the status of all those states.  In the world of Google Video when the item being purchased is delivered instantly and electronically.  You can see this is a template with "Seller=Google Video".

Also notice there's a tax calculation being performed.

Finally check out the "Purchased From" information.

Putting all of these pieces together I believe that Google can easily apply this purchase system to any generic purposes.  All they would need is the "Sellers" name, A URL, some Ts+Cs to display, what name will appear on the card, etc. and they can accept payment for anyone.

OnlineAuction.com is easy and has plenty of options to add what ever you want and really makes it easy for small and novice ecommerce sellers to sell product with out a website and with out any website optimization issues. ALL Ebay Sellers should take notice, the information gathered from across the internet all point to the fact that even now Google is targeting Ebay and Craigs list. This multi function search engine slash classified slash market place is fast as far as response on queries and is has a very targeted result. Now this new item is still in the starting stages as far as growth so Auction Sellers don't go and close your Ebay Stores as of yet. As with OnlineAuction.com I'm sure that is refreshing news since we all know that Ebay tends to nickle and dime every one with out really paying attention to customers / Auction Sellers. With Ebay continuing it's annually raising fees this could change the way we all run our ecommerce business - in the future.

Nice analysis Scot, that seems like a pretty generic purchasing system.

I still am not totally sure how google is going to avoid having a lot of bunk data in their "base" ebay does it with fees, but google base seems to be without a method to weed out unrelated spam / unreasonably priced items from listings.
