Google Base now taking google payments...

(insert jaws music here).

Google's payment system is now available to select sellers in gbase.  Here's an example of a live item where you can BIN and gbuy. (tip of the hat to Marshall for finding this)

Here's an interesting hint from the main google blog and it's also mentioned on the google base blog.

Looking ahead, we want to continue building payment services that meet the needs of Google users and advertisers. We expect to add payment functionality to Google services where our users need a way to buy online. For us, it's all about bringing our users a better online experience whether they're searching or buying.

This seems pretty blunt to me - we want to crush Paypal.

Google payments on Google Base is the equivelent of having Paypal on eBay - up next, off-Google merchants using it.

P.S. The fun guys at Google have encoded all listings that take payments with "XYZZY" - this is odd because my Dad used to have a PDP-11 that had Adventure on it and had this as the major word you had to figure out to solve stuff.  Ah you dang Google-ites you make us geeks so PROUD!!
