Justus to replace Bill Cobb?!

Ebay_philipp_justus_300dpi***UPDATE: We just got confirmation from eBay via Ina that while it is true that Justus is coming to the USA, he is not replacing Cobb, and may in-fact be reporting to Cobb. Original story continues.

The blogosphere is buzzing with this announcement made by eBay.de today that Phillip Justus is coming to the US to replace Bill Cobb as head of eBay.  It's being covered in the German press as well.

"Justus has done great work over the last seven years to build our business in Germany and more recently throughout Europe. I am therefore delighted that Philipp is moving to our Ebay headquarters in San José, and I am convinced that he will have a equally strong influence in his new role," said Meg Whitman, eBay's President.

Oddly there's no US announcement to go with this which is unusually uncoordinated for eBay's PR flacks.

I don't know what to make of this, it seems like Cobb is just getting some momentum with the latest changes against fraud and then here comes Justus.  eBay Germany isn't exactly a model of growth, so we'll have to wait and see a) if this is really going to be confirmed by the US and b) what Meg's thinking is.  I'm sure this will be a big topic of the Q4 conference call.

This could also be seen by Wall St. as evidence that eBay may not be having a great Q4.
